Charlton’s season this year has been fairly average and as the campaign is about to come to a close, they find themselves sitting 12th in the league.
The Addicks started this season under the management of Nigel Adkins who was dismissed in October and since then Johnnie Jackson has continued his role of caretaker manager to become the permanent manager.
As we approach the summer transfer window there is no doubt that Jackson will be looking to add to his side to allow them to push further up the table next season, whilst also retaining his most valuable players and with that in mind, we asked FLW’s Charlton fan pundit Ben Fleming who he would name as Charlton’s player of the season: “Player of the season undoubtedly George Dobson.
“Sort of in and out the side under Adkins, came in from Sunderland and they didn’t really think too much of him but under Jackson he’s been the first name on the teamsheet for basically the entirety of the season.
“He’s that base in midfield, he’s broken up the play fantastically. I think his range of passing is often underrated. I think people see him as a tough tackling midfielder but I think he’s got a bit of playmaking ability from the base.
“He’s been a real bright spark in what’s been a pretty average season and he is someone that is really going to make up the core of the team next year if we’re going to look to make a bid for the play-offs.”
Charlton Athletic quiz: Does the the Valley have a bigger or smaller capacity than these 20 stadiums?
It’s clear that Dobson has had a big part to play this year having made 37 league appearances for Charlton and also scoring a goal for his side too.
Considering he only arrived at the club in summer, he has been able to have a great impact on the team which is particularly impressive as he wasn’t given as much chance at the start of the season when Adkins was in charge of the club.
If Charlton are looking to move up the table towards the play-offs next year, as Ben says, Dobson is definitely the type of player that will need to be central to the team and will help them reach their next level.
