The past three years have seen Sunderland feature in three different divisions, following their back to relegations from the Premier League to League One.

The Black Cats, who have been under the reign of seven managers across this time, have started to turn their woes into moderate success, as they currently sit second in the League One table in the pursuit of promotion.

Sunderland were a Premier League club for ten consecutive years starting in 2007, but now find themselves battling to make it out of the third tier of English football under the guidance of Jack Ross.

The 42-year-old head coach, who took over managerial duties at the Stadium of Light in May this year, had a huge overhaul of players this summer, bringing in a whole host of new faces.

Whilst Sunderland have made wholesale changes to their squads previously, this season was like no other, with almost an entire new squad bought in over the summer transfer window.

With that in mind, we discuss the worst Sunderland signing from the last three years.

Alfie Burns

There’s been some high-profile names letting Sunderland down in recent years, but last year their goalkeeping department really stood out as a weak point.

For that reason, I’m going to say Jason Steele.

With a solid goalkeeper last season, things might’ve been different for Sunderland.

Bringing Steele in was a bad move all round.

Chris Gallagher

You can take your pick really.

I'd go for Didier Ndong. He was a big money capture and expected to be a key player for the Black Cats when they were in the top-flight.

Obviously, it didn't work and he's been a massive waste of money.
