John Hartson doesn’t think West Brom star Oliver Burke is a striker.

The winger is on loan at Celtic for the rest of the season and was used as a striker in the Europa League defeat to Valencia last night – and on other occasions by the club’s manager Brendan Rodgers.

Hartson made the comments on BT Sport’s ESPN show after the Scottish club crashed out of the European competition 3-0 on aggregate to the Spanish giants.

During his time in England, Burke had been used as a winger or a wide forward in a front three.

North of the border, however, Brendan Rodgers has deployed the 21-year-old as an out-and-out striker.

Burke endeavoured to forage forward and be a threat in on goal but did not manage to do so in the 90 minutes.

And this forced Hartson to express his concern at the role Burke was in, explaining he does not think he is an “out-and-out number nine.”

Does the former Celtic and West Brom striker have a point on Burke’s positional role at Celtic?

We asked our team of FLW writers their thoughts on the matter.

Jay Taylor

“His best position is out wide getting the ball deep and running at opponents – being up top is an entirely different role.

“West Brom fans will be aware of his qualities and will be hoping he can bring back to the Hawthorns and apply what he has learned at Celtic Park.

“Playing up top is a novelty, and it will wear off the more he plays there, which means his ineffectiveness in that role will start to become clear.

“Leave him out wide where he can be his devastating best.”

Gary Hutchinson

“Hartson should know, he was a top striker.

“I think Burke is a winger, but he could slot into the ten role.

“He’s not a nine, not the main focus, but he could play support.”

George Dagless

“He's bang on.

“Burke isn't really a central player, and I don't think he should be playing there primarily.

“He's a decent attacker but should be out wide rather than through the middle - Hartson knows what he's talking about let's be fair.”

Jacob Potter

I agree with him here.

“Burke doesn't strike me as a striker, and his attributes suggest that he is better suited in a role out wide.

“He'll be keen to prove to West Brom what they're missing out on this season.”
