Plymouth Argyle were hoping to find a way out of League Two when they turned to a 23-year-old journeyman from Scotland in June 2015.

The signing was Jake Jervis, a former Birmingham youngster who bagged four goals in 27 matches for Ross County in the SPFL.

On paper, there wasn't a lot to be excited about.

Jervis had already experienced plenty of different environments in his short career, with his Birmingham spell encompassing loans with Hereford, Notts County, Swindon, Preston, Carlisle, Tranmere, Portsmouth and Elazigspor. He finally went to Fratton Park permanently, only to flop.

Initially, he moved to Home Park on a one-year deal but the lukewarm reception wasn't encouraging. Other club's fans chipped in telling them how he'd been average for their club, whilst Plymouth supporters had perhaps hoped for someone a little more prolific.

As it turned out, all Jervis really needed was a run of games.

He never turned into a predator for Plymouth, but he certainly did much better than the billing he'd been given suggested he would. In 50 matches during his first season, he scored 14 times. 11 of those came in League Two as they unsuccessfully hunted promotion. That earned him a fresh deal with Derek Adams' side.

He scored 13 in 49 the following season as Argyle stormed to League One with automatic promotion. 27 goals in two seasons wasn't a bad record and he'd certainly enjoyed something akin to success.

He didn't fare as well in the higher level, managing four goals in 28 before joining Luton Town. He helped them to secure promotion, his second in as many years, but failed to score in ten matches.

This season he's involved in a battle of a different kind, going out on loan to AFC Wimbledon where he's hoping to keep them out of League Two. With two goals in 30 outings, he's not setting Kingsmeadow on fire.
