“He’s 25 which fits the age profile” – Burnley fan pundit reacts as club look to sign £3m-valued winger

Burnley have a Championship season ahead of them now, having been relegated back down to the second tier after playing Premier League football for the last six years.

They’re utilising the transfer window well in order to prepare themselves for this upcoming campaign too, with new manager Vincent Kompany signing plenty of fresh faces and bring in some new bodies to help them push for promotion.

Even with the likes of Scott Twine, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and CJ Egan-Riley having already been brought in to Turf Moor, the former Man City man still wants some more options amongst his squad it seems.

One new name to have been linked with a switch to the club is Manuel Benson, who currently plays for Antwerp in Belgium, and whom is rated at £3m by the Belgian club.

Quiz: Can you remember the score the last time Burnley played at these 26 stadiums?

It’s another player that Kompany wants to try and bring to England from his former league, with the manager having last managed Anderlecht in the Belgian First Division. Now, having scouted out the league, he knows some of the talent on offer and wants to sign some of the players he spotted whilst there.

With a bid of £1.5m rejected, there might not be much room for movement but Kompany certainly seems keen to add another winger like the Antwerp man to his ranks. Now, speaking about a potential deal for the player, Burnley’s FLW fan pundit Joe Skinner says the Clarets do need some more reinforcements – and Benson could be a good addition.

Speaking about the potential signing then, he said:”Manuel Benson, don’t really know much about him to be honest, so I can’t really comment but from what I’ve seen his agent has touted him as similar to the likes of Gareth Bale which is always great to look at on paper but again, it’s just comments so you don’t know until you see the guy.

“I think he got 14 goals and assists combined last season which is good. I’m not too sure about the standard of the Belgian league but my friend says it’s pretty similar to the Championship.

“He’s 25 which fits the age profile, he’s also got one year left on his contract which seems to be a pretty recurring theme amongst the recruitment department at Burnley at the moment, looking for players to try and get under market value, that they’re young and still have a bit of resale value.

“I’ve heard we’ve put in a £1.5m bid but Antwerp are looking for more of what they paid for him, which is £3m from Genk in 2019.

“Of course yeah, a winger is needed even if Maxwel Cornet stays because we’ve got Johan Berg Gudmundsson who is in his thirties now I think, he’s getting on a bit, great player but can be injury prone so we do need reinforcements in that department just in case Maxwel Cornet leaves and also to provide competition amongst the group.”

The Verdict

Burnley have signed some very good players so far this transfer window, arguably some of the very best talent that the EFL has to offer and the club are showing no signs of slowing down either.

Manuel Benson at Antwerp could be a solid addition if they do manage to seal a deal for him. The Belgian league is a decent level of competition like Joe says and it means that he could translate over to Championship football and to England quite nicely if he moves.

Burnley have a strong squad already and with Maxwel Cornet still on the books, there is a case to be made that they might have the best first-team squad and the best squad depth in the entire division right now. Adding someone like Benson to the mix will only strengthen the club further.

You’d have to fancy the Turf Moor outfit as one of the favourites for promotion – and even more so if Benson signs this window.
