Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin has been called up to the Scotland squad, which has drawn a mixed response from fans of the club.

The 32-year-old has one appearance for the national side already and it appears he may get an opportunity to increase that tally over the upcoming international break.

McLaughlin has been called up to Steve Clarke’s squad to face Russia and San Marino in the UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers.

Scotland have struggled in their qualifying group and are fifth in the standings, with just six points from six games.

The shot-stopper has featured in all 10 of Sunderland’s League One games this season but is yet to keep a clean sheet and has not been entirely convincing.

The Black Cats have had an underwhelming start to the 2019/20 campaign and are in fifth, already five points shy of league leaders Ipswich Town.

Sunderland’s back-up keeper Lee Burge has impressed in the Carabao Cup, conceding just two goals in three games and helping the League One side grab two Premier League scalps.

Many fans of the club appear slightly bemused by McLaughlin’s call-up, with some suggesting it shows how poor Scotland’s options are and others suggesting Burge should now get a chance.
