Football League World's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith has said that the Lyle Taylor situation is now incredibly tricky after the forward's contract offer was withdrawn after the self-imposed deadline was passed.

The news broke on Tuesday morning, via Richard Cawley of London News Online, with new owners East Street Investments confirming that they will now be listening to offers for the marksman this month.

And it is clear that Smith does not envy the person having to make such a decision this winter.

"Now here's the real dilemma," the regular punter told Football League World.

"If he has been categorically clear he wants to leave, then that would scream you should move him on to get a reasonable fee.

QUIZ: Can you remember Charlton’s last 15 January deals?

"The flip side is that make no mistake we are currently in a relegation battle and he is a proven goalscorer and you are left in January, which is a notoriously difficult market, trying desperately to replace him which is a big risk but a risk they will have to take I feel."

During his time with the club, Taylor has become an Addicks icon, netting 32 times in 58 games and of course helping them return to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season.

However his time in the second-tier has been a frutrating period so far, missing a huge chunk of the season with a knee injury, only recently returning to the field in a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough after missing 12 second-tier games.
