Jack Ross should resist the temptation to make any more permanent transfers.

Sunderland’s summer transfer business has gone remarkably well given the turmoil that engulfed the club at the close of last season. 14 players have been brought in and 22 have departed as Jack Ross has launched a complete overhaul of the squad.

There is a case to be made that more business is required. The huge amount of churn has left gaps in terms of squad depth in certain positions. However, this is not cause to charge head first into transfer deadline day. As much as fans like a dramatic last minute signing who will make their season, the reality shows that that is rarely the case. Last year saw Marc Wilson and Callum McManaman signed on deadline day. Neither had what could be called a successful season. Wilson was released and McManaman was moved on.

Given the £1 million spent on securing Charlie Wyke, it is unlikely that the club will wish to dip into their pockets again in this window. This leaves Ross to choose between free transfers and loans. His focus should be on the loan market. As well as offering access to higher quality players (it is notable that Wilson and McManaman were free transfers), this removes the time pressure of trying to complete business before the transfer window closes on Thursday. It will also allow Ross to have a look at his side in a competitive environment and better understand the players that he needs.
