It’s been a quiet summer so far, with Lincoln City yet to add to their title-winning side of last season.

The Imps haven’t lost any of their squad either, suggesting that Danny Cowley has been building towards League One for a while.

There are gaps in the squad though, so we quiz FLW writer Gary Hutchinson on where the Imps stand this summer...

It’s quiet on the transfer front, isn’t that a big worry?

"No, not at all.

"Danny Cowley is notorious for doing his business late in the summer, sometimes getting players in once the season has started.

"Jason Shackell, one of the key players last time out, didn’t arrive until after the big kick off. The year before, Neal Eardley joined with a couple of days to go before the start of the season.

"Even Michael Bostwick and Harry Anderson weren’t tied up until July 2017."

So, no worry at all?

"Some fans will be edgy, but surely three trophies in as many seasons is proof that the manager knows what he’s doing?

"If anyone is being critical, they’ll be pointing to a lack of experience dealing with football at this level.

"There is also the budget talk; it’s been mentioned several times that the Imps’ budget isn’t allowing for a lot of movement and that will have some fans a little concerned."

What are the main rumours so far?

"It’s widely believed Ben Coker is close to agreeing terms, which is odd as one thing the club doesn’t need right now is a left back. It does suggest a reshuffle, or maybe a departure the fans aren’t clued in on at present.

"Yesterday saw the club linked with Jorge Grant, David Ball and Enzio Boldewijn, all seemingly just media rumours."

Where do the club need to strengthen?

"Almost certainly up front. Leading scorer John Akinde didn’t reach double figures for goals from open play and one criticism levelled at the side was a lack of clinical finishing.

"Having lost Shay McCartan and Danny Rowe, both loan players returning to their parent clubs, it’s imperative that the Imps add at least one centre forward to their ranks, if not two."

Which players might be leaving the club?

"That depends on who you talk to, but the two most saleable assets are probably Harry Anderson and Bruno Andrade. The latter has been linked with Portsmouth and would command the sort of fee that could make a difference to the overall budget.

"Danny Cowley is always open to trading his best players. Sean Raggett left the club, as did Alex Woodyard and both were key players."

What strategy do you see Cowley employing from here on in?

"I can’t envisage any big news for another couple of weeks. They usually go deep into the summer to get value for money and that won’t change.

"He’ll tap the loan market too, that’s been a source of talent for him in the past, with Mark O’Hara and Danny Rowe having a big impact on the title-winning side.

"He’ll pull off something surprising; he usually does."
