After avoiding relegation in the 2016/17 campaign, the ambition at Swansea City heading into the summer will have been to ensure they were not in a scrap like that again.

After Francesco Guidolin and Bob Bradley were both sacked before the turn of the year, Paul Clement arrived and managed to guide the Swans to safety.

But he knew as well as anybody that plenty of work needed to be done in the summer in order to avoid a similar battle.

£45million was spent on new arrivals as the likes of Tammy Abraham, Erwin Mulder, Renato Sanchez, Roque Mesa and Wilfried Bony were brought to the Liberty.

One more man arrived from recently relegated Hull City as well.

With Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jack Cork both leaving in the same summer, some midfield talent was desperately needed.

Clement turned to Hull City man Sam Clucas, who came to the club for just under £15million.

It was a signing that showed the club doing exactly what they needed to do which went down incredibly well with the fans:

Sadly, Clucas was to have very little impact on the forthcoming horror show of a season.

The 28-year-old was picked to start in the first three games after his arrival in which the Swans won once, drew once and lost once.

Pressure continued to grow on Clement over the opening few months of the season as results continued to go against the club, winning just once between September and the start of December. By this stage Clucas was in and out of the starting XI erratically, playing as a central-midfielder, left-winger, left-back and even centre-back.

Clement's time was up at the start of December as Carlos Carvalhal was brought in to replace him.

The Spaniard looked like he might do the trick at one stage as three wins out of four in January even dragged the Swans up as high as 13th place. This included an impressive 3-1 win against Arsenal which saw Clucas score twice. Two of his three goals that season.

But sadly it all unravelled again. Eight straight games without a win to finish the season plunged them back into the relegation zone and the Swans were gone by the end of the season.

And, so was Clucas in the summer. The midfielder questionably jumping ship in order to join fellow relegated side Stoke City for just £6million.

It is probably safe to say that he did not, in fact, prove his worth at all.
