Aston Villa are finally firing with Dean Smith’s side putting together a late charge for the play-offs – they’re currently up to fifth in the table following the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.
Smith has managed to get the squad he largely inherited from Steve Bruce performing well, but regardless of where the Villans are playing this season, he is likely to be making major changes to the Villa Park squad.
For veterans like midfielder Glenn Whelan the future is uncertain, despite having made 28 appearances this season, with his contract expiring in the summer his future at Villa Park is in limbo
So will Whelan be axed in the summer by Smith?
“I think he will be a casualty of the summer revolution at Aston Villa.
“Despite performing well for Ireland last week, his club time is up with younger, fresher talent going to be the order of the day.
“Smith has experienced players in his team, who are all younger than Whelan.
“It is a necessary evil, but one I see coming.”
“He’ll be axed, i’m sure of it.
“Whelan has had a bit of a resurgence in recent weeks but Smith will remain intent on shipping out the older members of the squad.
“He has said he wants the squad to be more profitable and Whelan does not fit that bill at all.”
“He’s actually giving himself a lifeline.
“At Christmas I’d have said 100%, but he’s offering something different to Villa’s other midfielders and proving his worth to the squad.
“A lot might depend on his wage demands, but it wouldn’t be a complete shock to see Villa retain his service.”
