Coventry City signed striker Marc McNulty from Sheffield United on May 18th 2017, hoping his goals would fire the club out of the basement division.

Coventry had slipped into League Two despite winning the EFL Trophy at Wembley, whilst McNulty had watched on as his Sheffield United teammates earned promotion to the Championship. He parted ways with the Blades, but seemingly with their best wishes ringing in his ears.

Fans from both sides reacted positively to the move. Most seemed to suggest he would score goals for fun in League Two, with Coventry fans delighted to finally have a scorer at the club and Blades fans eager to sing his praises.

Some had him down as becoming the leading scorer in the division, others thought he'd bag 20 for the Sky Blues. It all seemed to bode well for the future, although their opening day 3-0 win against Notts County saw teammate Jodi Jones steal the headlines with a hat trick.

He took his time to get going, scoring just four times in his first 17 matches, two of those coming in the EFL Trophy. It looked as though maybe the claims of leading scorer in the division were wide of the mark and he was as far from 'tearing up' the league as anyone. Then November kicked in and Marc McNulty found his shooting boots.

He bagged 23 in League Two in total, including two hat tricks and goals in both play-off semi-final matches against Notts County. As the season drew to a close with a Wembley win, he'd gone from bargain free transfer to £1m striker.

He didn't quite finish as the leading scorer, Billy Kee pipped him to that title by two goals, but he did earn himself the big money move to Reading.

That hasn't worked out and he's now on loan in the SPL with Hibernian, but his obvious talents were spoted by both sets of fans before he kicked a ball for the Sky Blues.
