‘He’d fire them back to the Championship’ – Ipswich target & making Lambert’s XI: Opinion

Ipswich’s plans for the summer window have become a little clearer after it was reported that the Portman Road side are leading the race to complete the signing of Tranmere Rovers striker James Norwood.

The 28-year-old is this season’s leading league scorer across the top four divisions this season, with his 27 goals helping Tranmere to fifth in League Two in their first season back in the Football League following relegation in 2015.

Those goals earned him the prize of League Two Player of the Season at the EFL’s end of season awards, and with it, plenty of admirers from the leagues above.

According to HITC, Ipswich are leading League One sides Burton Albion and Fleetwood Town in the race to sign Norwood, with all three clubs monitoring his progress throughout the season.

The Tractor Boys themselves looked destined for League One next season, as they sit bottom of the Championship, 13 points from safety with just six games remaining.

So, would Norwood, who is out of contract at Prenton Park in the summer, get into the Ipswich starting line-up next season if he moves to Portman Road?

We asked some of our FLW writers for their thoughts…

George Harbey

“100% he would.

“Ipswich definitely need a goalscorer in the squad having been shy in front of goal this term.

“Norwood would be an excellent addition for them and would definitely add some threat up top.”

Toby Wilding

“While Norwood alone has 27 league goals this season, Ipswich’s entire squad has 32, so you feel he’d have a pretty good chance.

“Add to that the fact that a number of Ipswich’s current attackers are either only on loan or see their contracts expire in the summer, and you’d be surprised if Norwood wasn’t on the team sheet on the first day of next season if he comes to Portman Road.”

Chris Gallagher

“I think he would.

“It’s clear to see that Norwood is a goalscorer and he should be able to handle the step up, to what will be League One, with ease.

“The Tractor Boys don’t have anyone who can stick the ball in the net regularly and this would be a very good signing that would enhance the XI right now.”

Jacob Potter

“He’d be a certain starter.

“Ipswich need players in their squad that know how to get out of the lower divisions, and Norwood can definitely do that.

“He’d fire them back into the Championship if they signed him in the summer.”
