Edwards spent 17 years with the Baggies, but opted to depart in the summer, when his contract with them reached a conclusion.
He is currently training with Reading, and has been part of their pre-season squad which travelled to Scotland, but it remains to be seen as to where he’ll be playing his football next season.
Football Insider previously revealed that the Bhoys had entered talks with Edwards over a potential move to Celtic Park ahead of the 2021/22 season, as they look to wrestle back the Scottish Premiership title from rivals Rangers.
Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, former West Brom forward Kevin Phillips felt as though Edwards could thrive with Celtic, but did admit that Baggies supporters could question why they let the 23-year-old depart in the summer.
“If you’re going from the Premier League to the Scottish Premiership, I think he’d do really well up there.
“I think he needs a change of scenery. He can go and play regularly or hopefully at least be involved in matchdays, on the bench or whatever just to show what he can do.
“So it wouldn’t surprise me if he went up there and did really well. Then all of a sudden it might be one of those where West Brom fans are asking: ‘Why did we let him go?”
West Brom are set to take on AFC Bournemouth in their opening match of the 2021/22 league campaign, in what is likely to be a tricky test for the Baggies at the Vitality Stadium..
Can you score full marks on this quiz about some of West Brom's biggest ever moments?
I have to agree with Phillips here.
Edwards is only 23, and you would imagine that he’ll still have his best years ahead of him. We’ve seen glimpses of his quality whilst with West Brom, but he’s not been given regular game time for him to be assessed fairly by supporters.
Reading are clearly keen on striking a deal to sign him if they’ve got him on trial, but with a club the stature of Celtic also eyeing a move for Edwards, he’ll have a tough decision to make.
If the Bhoys can offer him first-team assurances, then it really wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him head to Celtic Park this summer. West Brom will be hoping they won’t be making a mistake in moving him on earlier this year.
