Stoke City look set to turn to Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay in their search for a new centre back, according to the Sun's Alan Nixon.

They're prepared to have a look at 23-year-old Lindsay after allegedly being quoted £5m for Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke, their first choice. Boss Nathan Jones has first hand experience of both players having faced them in League One with Luton Town this season.

On a day where his former club went to the top of League One, his current side struggled at home to Preston North End, highlighting the desperate need for recruitments at the back. With just five days left in the transfer window, Jones has to act quick.

Lindsay has formed a formidable partnership with Ethan Pinnock for the Tykes, who have been rocked by the loss of Brad Potts in recent weeks. They moved up to third in League One yesterday, four points behind Luton with a game in hand, but Jones is hoping to do his former employers a favour by raiding their rivals.

Would Liam Lindsay be a good signing for Stoke City? Our FLW experts discuss.

Gary Hutchinson

"He's the lesser of the two centre backs at Oakwell, but that's no slur. In Pinnock and Lindsay they have two of the finest outside the top two divisions.

"He'd be a class signing, he's been at the level before and has grown as a player too.

"He's not making the same mistakes Paul Hurst made either, Lindsay is light years ahead of Nsiala who flopped at Portman Road."

George Harbey

"I’ve been a fan of Lindsay for quite some time and he’d be an excellent signing for Stoke.

"He’s still young and has real quality in defence, and has been a mainstay in a Barnsley back-line that has conceded very few goals this term.

"He’d be exactly what they need."

Lee Connor

"I think this would be a steady signing for Stoke in all honesty, and could be what they need.

"Lindsay knows the league and has grown into one of the most reliable central defenders in League One.

"They seem to produce them at Barnsley, with the likes of John Stones and Alfie Mawson going on to do well, and Lindsay might well be the next to follow suit".
