Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in signing Doncaster Rovers midfielder Ben Whiteman according to The Athletic.
Whiteman has been hugely impressive with the League One side this season, as they challenge for promotion into the Championship under the management of Darren Moore.
The midfielder has made 23 appearances in all competitions this term, and has chipped in with eight goals and seven assists for Donny, who are currently sat fourth in the third-tier standings.
Whiteman has also been attracting interest from the likes of Preston North End and Derby County, although it remains to be seen as to which club is leading the race to land his signature.
It has recently been reported that the midfielder was left out of the Doncaster Rovers squad for their recent match against Blackburn Rovers as a ‘precautionary’ measure after reportedly having his ‘head turned’ after interest from elsewhere.
But would Whiteman be a good signing for Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window?
It would be some coup if they could pull it off.
Forest are desperate for a player like Whiteman. They are desperate for a bit of creativity from midfield, and someone who play between the thirds.
Whiteman is an all-round, complete midfielder. He’s solid defensively, but going forward, he can pick out a pass and create chances from a deep-lying role.
That’s something Forest have been missing for a while, since the days of Henri Lansbury, really.
They don’t have a central midfielder who is able to create. Ryan Yates often pops up with a goal, but someone who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and pick out some good passes.
He’d be a quality addition.
I would say so yes, he’s by far one of the best operators in his position at League One level and appears ready to make the step up.
Forest as always, may have a bit of money to spend and I think Chris Hughton definitely feels he needs some fresh blood in at the City Ground in order to gte his side moving up the league standings over these coming months.
Whiteman would no doubt jump at the chance to move to the Championship and I think his style of play would suit the way the Reds are looking to go about their business this term.
It’s a thumbs up in every department for me on this one and I think it’s a move that Forest should strongly consider as they look to improve.
Did Nottingham Forest sign each of these players for more or less than £1 million? Test your knowledge in our quiz!
I really like this move but you feel they need to clear space for him.
Forest have got a bloated squad and they’re certainly not short in midfield, they need to be trimming in that area if they’re planning on signing Whiteman.
The Doncaster midfielder could be just what Chris Hughton needs to help his side control games better and he has shown that he has the quality to make incisive forward passes at the right time.
At 24, he could be the long-term option for the Reds but they need to make room for him.
