Sunderland have had a decent start to the season in League One, with Jack Ross' side up to fourth in the table, just four points adrift of leaders Coventry City with only one defeat to their name so far this season.

Ross has got his squad playing well, but with the rigours of a full League One season ahead, strength in depth will be vital to maintain a promotion push.

This is a situation that may prompt Ross to rekindle his interest in Peterborough United winger Marcus Maddison who has had an excellent start to the season, the winger has notched five goals and six assists already in League One.

So should Sunderland look to make a move for Maddison in January instead of the summer?

We discuss........

Chris Gallagher

"Without a doubt, he'd be a huge addition.

"He is exactly the sort of player that the Black Cats are crying out for. There is still a major reliance on Aiden McGeady in terms of providing that bit of magic and skill but Maddison has similar qualities in that sense - as Sunderland found out recently.

"If they could pull it off, it would be a real statement signing and one that would seriously improve Jack Ross' side.

"Clearly, they are going to have to pay the release clause in his contract as Peterborough won't entertain any lower offers from a promotion rival. So, it's down to Sunderland to see if they can make it happen."

Louie Chandler

"I really don't think he is what they need - and I am not just saying that as a Peterborough fan.

"In Chris Maguire and Aiden McGeady, the Black Cats already possess two of the best wide players in the division so it is not exactly an area they are weak in.

"Looking at those leading the line would perhaps be a better idea as well as those on either side of the defence.

"They would still have to pay £2.5million for Maddison in January which I do not think would be justifiable."

Dean Cooke

"It'll probably cost them a lot more now. I think they should rekindle their interest, of course, even Championship teams should, but it'll take a lot now to get him to move away from Peterborough.

"Many questioned why he hadn't left and if he was holding out for more money, but either way, he seems to have got his head down and his been superb so far this season.

"Maddison is an excellent player at League One level, and often when watching Sunderland they miss a creative spark or a match winner. Maddison could be that man for them, and would help their quest to the Championship."
