Leeds United’s goalkeeping issues have been well documented in recent weeks, with Felix Wiedwald one man in particular coming in for criticism following a string of mistakes.

Paul Heckingbottom has kept faith with the German goalkeeper, opting not to throw Bailey Peacock-Farrell into the deep end or recall Andy Lonergan from the bench.

The faith of the Elland Road head-coach was rewarded yesterday, with Wiedwald keeping his 12th clean sheet of the season, as Leeds edged to a 1-0 victory over Brentford in the Sky Bet Championship.

Here at FLW, we believe that the 27-year-old’s contribution at Elland Road yesterday was terrific, and minus one shaky moment towards the end of the contest – where the goalkeeper punched a routine free-kick – he was solid.

During the first-half, Wiedwald denied John Egan with a superb save, and claimed a number of crosses, with his communication with his defence seemingly much improved against the Bees.

Of course, Leeds’ supporters will be wary of piling too much praise on the goalkeeper, however, they will have left Elland Road feeling encouraged by an improved defensive performance on the whole.

Despite yesterday’s result, Leeds’ play-off chance is still slim and a large percentage of Heckingbottom’s squad know they are playing for their future at Elland Road – including £1.8m-rated Wiedwald.

The German goalkeeper certainly gave a good account of himself as the run-in begins.
