Hecky must consider dropping this £2.7m-rated Leeds United player tomorrow against Sheff Utd

Leeds United have fallen out of the Sky Bet Championship’s play-off race at an alarming rate, with the Whites entering this weekend’s round of fixtures in 10th, seven points adrift of the top-six.

A slump in early 2018 has ultimately cost Thomas Christiansen his job at Elland Road, with Paul Heckingbottom replacing the Dane over the course of the last week.

Heckingbottom is now preparing his new side for their clash with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane tomorrow, with the 40-year-old tasked with turning Leeds’ fortune around in the Championship and delivering a first victory of the calendar year.

A number of key selection dilemmas face Heckingbottom, and here at FLW, we believe that he needs to be bold with his selection and drop £2.7m-rated Ezgjan Alioski, who since Christmas, has looked a shadow of the player we saw during the first-half of the season.

Alioski’s start to his Leeds career was magnificent, and despite struggling over the course of October, the winger impressed in November and early December – the period he scored the bulk of his five goals.

However, the Macedonian international has not found the back of the net since November’s triumph over Heckingbottom’s Barnsley side, with his performances in 2018 pulling plenty of criticism from Leeds’ supporters.

Of course, others have been poor at Elland Road in recent weeks and it is easy to forget this is Alioski’s first season in the Championship.

However, the 25-year-old has set himself some high standards, which simply aren’t getting met by the winger anymore.

Heckingbottom will want to make a firm impact on his arrival at Elland Road, and it would be a brave decision to pull Alioski from the starting XI, but perhaps one that needs to be made given the winger’s form.
