Paul Heckingbottom is keen on a reunion with Ashley Fletcher this summer, with the Leeds United head-coach eyeing a move for the Middlesbrough forward.

According to the Gazette Live, should Boro make Fletcher available for loan in the summer, Leeds will be amongst the clubs looking to sign him.

Fletcher previously worked with Heckingbottom at Barnsley, after arriving at Oakwell on-loan in January 2016. The forward delivered nine goals in 27 appearances, including a goal in the League One play-off final victory over Millwall.

Since then, Fletcher has moved to West Ham and then Middlesbrough, with the Teessiders forking out £6.5m to secure the 22-year-old’s signature.

Opportunities at the Riverside Stadium have been limited for Fletcher, who has spent the second-half of the 2017/18 campaign on-loan with Sunderland, where he has been part of the Black Cats’ relegation from the Championship.

This season, Fletcher has scored just three goals across all competitions, including two in the Championship.

Leeds were previously linked with a move for Fletcher in January 2017, but Garry Monk’s efforts to sign the striker from West Ham were blocked by Slaven Bilic.

The Verdict

Heckingbottom’s previous connections with Fletcher could tempt the 22-year-old to finally move to Elland Road in the summer.

Leeds’ supporters will certainly have their concerns about making a move for Fletcher, given his struggle for goals this season in the Championship.

However, under Heckingbottom, at Barnsley, the striker enjoyed his most prolific spell.

If Heckingbottom is confident he can get the best out of the young forward, it could be a move that works for Leeds.
