Paul Heckingbottom has jumped to the defence of Ronaldo Vieira, after the Leeds United midfielder came in for criticism following his performance against Derby County during the week.

Vieira was substituted during the second-half of Leeds’ 2-2 draw at the Pride Park Stadium, with the 19-year-old putting in a below average performance against the Rams.

Heckingbottom has now jumped to the defence of Vieira, telling Adam Pope of BBC Radio Leeds that the midfielder has extremely high standards, and urging his player to enjoy how far he has come.

The Elland Road boss said:

Vieira burst onto the scene last season for Leeds under Garry Monk, making 38 appearances, but has struggled to replicate that form in his 22 appearances this season for the Whites.

It remains to be seen if Vieira retains his place in the starting XI this afternoon against Brentford, after Kalvin Phillips was turned to against Derby on Wednesday evening.

Heckingbottom is going in search of his first victory as Leeds head-coach this afternoon against Brentford, having picked up two points from his opening three fixtures at the helm.

The Verdict

Vieira was poor against Derby, and the midfielder will be amongst the first to admit that.

However, Heckingbottom needs to put an arm round Vieira and help his progression, as he is a talent that has a big future with Leeds.

Pulling the teenager from the spotlight this afternoon against Brentford might be the sensible option, however, in the long-term, Heckingbottom has to find a way of getting the best out of Vieira alongside Adam Forshaw in central midfield.
