Hearts boss Robbie Neilson has been fielding questions regarding Sheffield Wednesday forward Callum Paterson as the transfer deadline looms.

The Scottish side's desire to do a deal for the Owls striker has been public for quite some time now, with the 28-year-old into the final six months of his deal at Hillsborough.

So far, Sheffield Wednesday have held firm, reportedly rejecting two offers for the forward, with a third expected to be made today, as per the Edinburgh Evening News.

When quizzed about Paterson, Hearts boss Neilson failed to name names, but admitted things were very quiet at present.

He did, though, state that the club would like to add one more player to their ranks.

"We are interested in a number of players but it is very quiet at the moment, as it is everywhere," said Neilson when questioned on a potential Paterson deal ahead of the deadline, via The Yorkshire Post.

"We will wait and see how the next 12 or so hours go.

"It is late in the window, we are still trying but it is difficult. I am happy with what we have got but I would like to add one more.

"Whoever we get has to be at a level so they can improve the squad, not just be another number."

There have also been suggestions that Hearts could make the Owls' number 13 a pre-contract offer ahead of the summer should they fail to convince Wednesday to do business today.

Paterson has four goals and three assists in 28 club appearances so far this campaign.

The Verdict

After weeks of speculation this looks like one going right down to the wire.

It must be said, though, it would be very surprising if Sheffield Wednesday were to suddenly be open to Paterson departing this month.

Having reportedly rejected two offers already, it feels as though the Owls' stance has been made perfectly clear.

It may be that Hearts have to be patient until the summer to land their target on a free transfer.
