Football League World's Sunderland fan pundit Charlie Hodgson has called for the club to appoint Daniel Stendel as their next manager after Jack Ross was sacked on Monday.

Earlier in the week, the club announced that they had terminated Ross' contract and that assistant manager James Fowler would take temporary charge of the first team while they looked for a new permanent boss.

Ross joined the club last summer and was close to achieving promotion from League One in his first season but saw his side defeated by Charlton Athletic in the play-off final.

The 2019/20 campaign had started unconvincingly and with Sunderland sixth, eight points back from league leaders Ipswich Town, and it appears last weekend's 2-0 loss to Lincoln Town was the final nail in the coffin.

As expected, there have been a long list of names linked to the vacant post at the Stadium of Light, with the likes of Roy Keane, Kevin Phillips, and Gareth Ainsworth all mentioned.

Stendel is another name that has been linked and Hodgson has suggested that the German coach, who was sacked by Barnsley on Monday, would be the ideal man to bring in.

He explained: "Stendel is my choice as manager, I think he would be perfect.

"He was loved by the Barnsley fans, he plays attacking, high-pressure football which will excite the supporters and he has the experience from last season of getting Barnsley promoted from this league, with the best defensive record in the league–which is something we are far from.

"His record at Hannover is also reasonably good, given them being a decently sized club recently relegated, similar to us."

Sunderland have until Saturday the 19th of October before their next match, when they travel to Adams Park to face Wycombe Wanderers.
