Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa looks to be on the look-out for a new front-man during the January transfer window, though the Whites' enquiry for Watford striker Andre Gray looks like a non-starter, after the Hornets knocked back their approach about the availability of the 28-year-old, according to Athletic journalist Phil Hay on Twitter.

Gray arrived at Watford in 2017 making 78 appearances in all competitions, though he’s started only seven times for the Hornets this term, having previously played for clubs including Burnley, Brentford and Luton Town.

So would Gray have been a good addition, if he had made the move to Elland Road?

We discuss.........

Chris Gallagher

"He would be a perfect signing for the Whites.

"Obviously, they need a new striker after Eddie Nketiah went back to Arsenal and the Watford man would have been an ideal recruit.

"Firstly, he has proven himself at this level with clubs in the past, so he should be able to adapt pretty quickly and make a big impact.

"As well as that, he has all the qualities to thrive in a Bielsa team. The Argentinian likes quick, mobile strikers and that's what Gray offers, whilst he also works hard and is capable of leading the press from the front. If there is any chance for Leeds to resurrect this deal they should be all over it as he would be a real coup and would provide excellent competition to Patrick Bamford."

“Che Adams is clearly the prime target at the moment and rightly so, given his form last season for Birmingham and the style of player he is, but Gray would be have been a top alternative.

“Having ripped up the Championship with Brentford and Burnley, Gray has shown qualities much akin to what Bielsa wants in his striker, with hard work, holdup play, coupled with great finishing.

“He isn’t playing at the moment with Watford so there is an element of doubt over whether he could hit the ground running but he certainly has the quality that Leeds need at the moment.

“I doubt Leeds will come back in for Gray but this would have been a very strong signing for the promotion-chasers and he could have been the goalscorer that they are looking for.”

George Brooks

"Leeds need another striker this month to replace Eddie Nketiah and provide some competition for Patrick Bamford, I think Andre Gray would have been a great signing.

"He's got plenty of experience in the Championship and knows exactly what it takes to score goals at this level, having done so in the past with Burnley and Brentford.

"His goal record at this level is pretty impressive, so you've got to imagine that he would've been able to make an impact for Leeds, should he have made the switch to Elland Road.

"There's a strong chance that Leeds will win promotion to the Premier League this season too and Gray has already got plenty of experience in the top flight, so he'd have been a good signing in that sense as well."
