Sunderland are currently preparing for another crack at League One by looking for new players to bolster to their squad.

One player they are looking to add is former Rotherham winger Jon Taylor, who has been made available on a free after being released by the club relegated in the Championship last season.

According to the Chronicle Live, the club are fighting competition from Championship clubs Barnsley and Luton for his signature.

In our latest FLW Six Pointer, writer Tommy Joyce takes a look at this potential deal in a bit more detail.

What do we know about Jon Taylor?

"Jon Taylor was is a right winger who was born in Liverpool and made his name at Shrewsbury Town.

"The 26-year-old has played for three clubs in Shrewsbury Town, Peterborough United and Rotherham United, but will be joining a new club this summer with his him leaving The Millers.

"Taylor is can play on both flanks and has a lot of experience at League One level, having played 171 games with 33 goals and 19 assists."

Would he be a good signing?

"Baring in mind his ability to play both on the right and the left flank, and he has over 170 games in League One to his name, he would be a great signing for the Black Cats.

"Sunderland need some players who know how to get out of division - and this is one of them.

"The club came up short when they had some injuries to key players on the flank last season, so signing Taylor would really solve one problem for the club."

Would he start?

"If Sunderland want to bring Taylor to the club, they really need to be promising a starting place.

"He was a first teamer for Rotherham in the Championship so he will be expecting to be a key player in League One.

"If the club can keep hold of Aiden McGeady, then they will have really experience and quality on either wing and it could prove too much for a lot of League One competition.

"Gooch really struggled for form on the right wing towards the end of last season and I think that his poor end to the season has encouraged Ross to go out and go after a right winger."

Are there better options?

"Baring in mind Sunderland still need to watch their finances, and really desperately need to get out of this league, I can't think of many better options for the club as he fits both of those criteria.

"The biggest problem for Sunderland is convincing him to play in League One. There are reports that he doesn't want to drop a division so I think that will be the biggest hurdle for them."

What does this mean for Gooch?

"It's not the end of the road for Gooch. At 23, he still has a bright future at Sunderland, and a run out of the side might actually benefit the American.

"His form dwindled towards the end of the season and could have actually done with being dropped but Sunderland didn't have the resources to replace him with any quality."

How will Sunderland fans feel about this signing?

"Sunderland fans would be rightfully delighted if they managed to get this deal over the line, but the club might struggle to do that.

"He is exactly the sort of player the club needs and he will be able to thrive at a good side in League One. It's a good opportunity for Taylor to go somewhere with Sunderland, but the club might have to get lucky by Championship clubs not going after him."
