Helder Costa has been an important player for Leeds United this season, but his summer transfer hasn't quite worked out the way fans at Elland Road had hoped.

The 25-year-old joined Leeds on a loan-to-buy deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

As a tricky winger, with recent experience of winning promotion from the Championship, Costa's arrival at Elland Road was met with a huge sense of excitement and anticipation from Leeds fans ahead of the new season.

Plenty of fans were relishing the prospect of seeing the Portuguese winger in action and couldn't wait to see him tear Championship defences apart with his blistering pace and skill on the ball.

After weeks of rumours and transfer speculation, Leeds finally announced that they'd secured Costa's services and plenty of Whites fans could hardly contain their excitement.

However, things haven't turned out quite as most Leeds fans were expecting.

Costa has been an important player for Leeds this season and has featured in every game for the Whites in the Championship, but despite his undeniable quality and experience at this level, the wideman has mostly been forced to settle for a place on the bench.

The winger has made 13 appearances for Leeds in all competitions so far this season, but eight of his eleven Championship outings have come from the substitutes bench.

Some of his early-season performances have been impressive, but he's generally struggled to get into the team ahead of Pablo Hernandez and Jack Harrison.

That changed recently when Hernandez was ruled out with an injury, but Costa's performances over the past three games have been well below his usual standard.

It now seems fairly likely that Hernandez will reclaim his place in the Leeds starting line-up when he returns from injury after the international break.

Costa has shown glimpses of the best quality and has shown that he is more than capable of being the player that Leeds fans were crying out for him to be upon his arrival at the club, but he's struggle to maintain his consistency.

He arrived at Elland Road with a reputation of being a player capable of producing moments that can change games, but Leeds fans are yet to see that this season and his only goal of the campaign came against Stoke City in the Carabao Cup.

Fans at Elland Road will be desperately hoping to see the winger make more of an impact for Leeds as the season progresses.
