“He will only get better” – Stoke City fan pundit identifies 22-year-old as the club’s unsung hero this season

Stoke City have endured somewhat of an average 2021/22 campaign in the Championship.

The Potters currently sit 12th in the league table, firmly mid-table in the league after showing some play-off potential early in the season.

The last couple of months were difficult ones for Michael O’Neill, but with three wins in their last four, the Potters boss seems to have steadied the ship.

At every club in the Championship this season there has been an unsung hero of sorts, and Stoke City are no exception to this.

With that in mind, we asked FLW’s Stoke City fan pundit Ben Rowley for his thoughts on who could be considered the Potters’ unsung hero for the 2021/22 campaign.

“This is a weird one because he’s been in and out of the team, but I’m going to go for Ben Wilmot.” Ben told FLW.

“He has looked reasonably assured in defence when he has played, he can play out from the back which is great. He’s certainly got a decent shot on him too scoring a goal for about 40 yards out a couple months ago.”

“He’s only young, I think he’s in his early twenties and he will only get better at Stoke.”

“I think he can get criticised because Stoke’s defence has looked rocky in this second half of the season, but I don’t think that Ben Wilmot’s been the cause of that.”

“I think give him a couple years at Stoke and he’ll be, you know, one of the league’s best defenders.”

The Verdict

It’s interesting to hear our fan pundit select Ben Wilmot as Stoke’s unsung hero for 2021/22.

On the outside looking in, this isn’t the obvious choice given that he has been in and out of the team lately.

Perhaps it is his versatility that has got him the nod for this one, given he has filled in at right back at times, according to Transfermarkt.

One thing is for sure though – Wilmot will only get better given that he is just 22-years-old.
