Football League World's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith has issued his thoughts on the news that Jonny Williams has signed on a permanent deal for Lee Bowyer's side.

The Addicks are preparing for life in the Championship after winning promotion in dramatic fashion from League One last term, and Smith has high hopes for Williams in his second-spell with the club.

"At the end of June we had lost all of the influential quartet of Williams, Aribo, Bielik and Cullen who were so instrumental in the push from January which lead to promotion," Smith told FLW.

"So getting Williams signed up was a great boost. He’s a really popular character in the dressing room and understands Bowyer’s style of play."

The Charlton fan pundit feels that the former Crystal Palace midfielder can build on some impressive showings heading into next season, especially if Lee Bowyer can keep him fit for the majority of next year's campaign.

"Despite a difficult, injury-plagued career, it may have gone unnoticed but Jonny has played over 100 Championship games in his career.

"Last season, despite not scoring a single goal in Charlton colours it was apparent that he was a league above in most games.

"He offers Charlton real quality on the ball, he can pick a pass and what I suspect will be crucial, carries the ball as well anyone at this level which will allow us to get up pitch.

"The trick of course will be to keep him fit, if so I expect he will go from strength-to-strength."

Smith went on to admit that he doesn't expect Williams to be a regular starter for Bowyer's side next season, but his game time could depend on where his main position will be in the Charlton side.

"Based on last season, Williams was utilised largely as a number 10 or secondarily as wide in the four in midfield and he is effective in both.

"The number ten position will be an interesting one, it has been suggested that new signing Chuks Aneke has been earmarked for that role so Williams may indeed play wide in a similar role to the play-off final, where he came on to make a real impact creating the momentum for us to go and win the game.

"It certainly won’t be a guaranteed starting spot for Jonny, especially in tough games where a more defensive approach is needed, but it’s not in any doubt for Charlton to have a successful season, Williams will need to play a critical role."
