Football League World’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Thomas Fogg has suggested that midfielder Massimo Luongo will cement his place in the first team this season and become an integral player.

Luongo signed from QPR on transfer deadline day, joining after the London club had reportedly been unable to extend his contract due to financial issues.

The Australian has been a bit-part player for the Owls so far, making eight appearances this season–mostly from the bench.

The 27-year-old got his first Championship start of the season against Wigan Athletic last weekend and grabbed the opportunity with both hands–scoring the winner to secure the three points and help Wednesday climb to eighth in the table.

Fogg is confident that Luongo will have an important role to play for Garry Monk’s side as the season wears on but suggested he may not become a regular fixture straight away.

He explained: “I think as the season progresses, he will become more integral to the side–he may have to be patient in the immediate future but once he gets a few games in a row in the starting XI, I think we’ll see him cementing his place.”

Fogg suggested that this would likely mean the Australia international replacing Sam Hutchinson in defensive midfield.

He said: “If Luongo is going to secure a permanent starting role, he will probably have to take Hutchinson’s place, which means he’s going to have to play deeper and provide the screen for the defence and this may perhaps restrict his ability to get involved in attacks.”

Wednesday’s next game comes against Cardiff City on Friday the 18th of October.
