Tony Xia has invested a lot since he took over Aston Villa but unfortunately last season was a real disaster for the club.

Many millions were wasted on poor signings and Roberto Di Matteo was replaced by Steve Bruce before Christmas.

The ex-Wigan boss was handed a big budget in January again but it made little difference for the rest of the season.

Such spending meant Villa had to cut back in the summer in order to comply with FFP rules although they have still managed to bring in players on big wages such as John Terry and Robert Snodgrass.

In the window just gone, Bruce was again restricted and the two incomings were both loan signings – Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United and Lewis Grabban from Sunderland.

So, has Xia done enough to help Villa’s promotion push?

We take a look…

George Dagless

He had tough circumstances to contend with.

I think Xia did what he needed to in helping sign a striker and with loan deals the only option he's done fairly well.

If there's any criticism perhaps a couple more loans could have come in but Villa should have the squad for that not to matter.

Alfie Burns

I think he did what he had to do.

Villa’s squad is already filled with talent, but adding a striker was key and Tuanzebe’s defensive versatility will strengthen Bruce’s hand.

Of course, every owner could’ve done more, but Xia sorted what was required at Villa Park.

Sam Preston

He did everything Villa needed him to do.

He kept Robert Snodgrass, got Bruce what he feels is a defensive upgrade in Tuanzebe and most importantly, got a striker in on loan who can score goals at this level.

Villa reacted well to missing out on top target Leonardo Ulloa and brought in someone just as good, if not better, for this league. He couldn't have done much more, given FFP, and Bruce now has everything he needs to get Villa up.
