Returning Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy is asking the FAI to investigate whether there is an Irish connection with Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell, even though the player has played at U18 & U19 for England, as reported in the Irish Mirror.

It is reported that McCarthy watched O'Connell in the Blades 3-2 win over Brentford in the Championship and with the 24-year-old in good form for the Blades he may well need to decide where his allegiances lie sooner rather than later.

So should O'Connell choose the ROI or keep focused on England?

We discuss.....

George Harbey

If he’s got any ambition he’ll stick with England.

Fighting for a place in the England squad would definitely improve his game and make him more determined, which would be beneficial for United.

Choosing Ireland is an easy way out.

Gary Hutchinson

If he wants regular international football, he should switch.

He’s not going to get games for England. Sorry, that is just fact.

He’ll be playing for Eire within a couple of months if he switches.

The choice is his, but it seems straightforward.

Jacob Potter

He should be considering other options.

Let’s be realistic here, what chance does he have of breaking into the England set up? None.

He’s never going to get in Southgate’s side ahead of the likes of John Stones and Joe Gomez so he should certainly be considering changing his national side
