Middlesbrough look like facing competition from two Championship rivals in their pursuit of 27-year-old Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

Both Aston Villa and West Brom are also interested in the player, who is Brentford club captain and who has made 26 appearance for the Bees this season.

So would Sawyers be a good signing for Boro?

We discuss.....

Alfie Burns

“It’s been fairly obvious throughout the season so far that Boro are missing something going forwards.

“Sawyers is a player that can influence the final third and I think he’d be a really good addition at Boro.

“He looks like a Tony Pulis signing.”

George Dagless

"For sure.

"Middlesbrough have a powerful, physically imposing side and Sawyers would seriously add to that.

"Boro's form has been up and down in recent months, Sawyers would help them rediscover that formidable touch they had."

Gary Hutchinson

“Not for me.

“I can’t see him settling at Boro at all. Look at Besic and Baker last season, midfielders in and out under Pulis.

“Their game just doesn’t suit him one bit.

“It’s a match doomed to fail.”

Jay Taylor

“I am not sure Tony Pulis knows what he wants during this transfer window.

Sawyers is a winger by reputation, but he has been more effective this season in the middle of the pitch and looks to have found a home there.

“If Boro are after a midfielder, then the Bees talisman is the way to go, but if they want a winger, then they would be going after Sawyers for the wrong reasons I feel.

“Boro need a winger of the explosive variety and should look to move for a player of that ilk rather than Sawyers who is dynamic in his own way but lacks the explosiveness of Adama Traore, who they are still trying to replace.”
