Sheffield Wednesday were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round last night, after losing 2-0 to Premier League side Everton at Hillsborough.
The Owls have enjoyed a positive start to life under Garry Monk, and have picked up four points in two games under his management after salvaging a late point against Fulham at the weekend.
Tuesday night gave Monk a chance to rotate his squad against the Toffees in the League Cup, but the gulf in class eventually showed.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored two goals in quick succession to put the game out of Wednesday’s reach, despite Sam Winnall squandering a big chance early on.
The night also gave midfielder Massimo Luongo the chance to impress Monk, and make only his second starting appearance for the Owls this season.
The Australian midfielder is yet to make a start in the Championship since arriving from QPR in the summer, but added real tenacity and energy to the midfield alongside Joey Pelupessy on Tuesday.
Plenty of Owls fans have took to Twitter to rave about Luongo’s performance – here, we look at the best reactions…
#swfc my comments on last night…I’m afraid Odubajo is not good enough- Luongo needs to start – I don’t get Winall and never have – Reach needs to get more involved, he was a spectator for most of the first half – Nuhiu was our best player

After a sloppy start we grew into the game last neyt and had the best chances, good character to not let heads drop going 2-0 down so early on. Luongo stood out for me he’s got to be knocking on door for a start. #swfc

This is probably going to be a minority opinion but if we go to boro and play 3 CM I'd drop Bannan for Luongo. Have Hutchinson sitting and Luongo and Lee box to box with lots of energy. Bannan can be awol in some game and think boro would be one #swfc

May have lost but surely that performance by Luongo warrants a starting place on Saturday. Thought he was excellent. #swfc

Luongo has to start Saturday for hutch and winnal looks like he’s lost that killer instinct hope it’s just sharpness but looks as if injuries have took their toll snapping at chances #swfc
