Derby County and Aston Villa will both be eyeing up the second automatic promotion spot this season and it’s the Rams who have the current advantage.
However, there’s a long way to go and the performances of Matej Vydra and Jack Grealish could have a big say in who is ultimately successful in their pursuit of promotion.
Czech international Vydra has been a sensation for Gary Rowett’s men this season, scoring 15 goals which makes him the joint top scorer in the division.
Meanwhile, Grealish has had a much different first-half to the campaign. He has only played eleven games after a freak kidney injury kept him out.
Nevertheless, he is just beginning to show the form that many know he is capable of and has started Villa’s last three wins against Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest.
But, which star is worth more in the current market?
We take a look…
Grealish for me.
The two are good players and Vydra has actually had the better season.
If you asked me who’d be better in the Premier League I’d say Grealish, though, and I think he is worth about £10m more than Vydra.
Vydra is more central to his club’s plans but Grealish would command a much higher fee on the transfer market.
He is younger, English and more versatile. Derby cannot afford to lose Vydra’s goals but given his age and injury record, his price would be lower.
Grealish’s nationality and age mean he would probably be worth more in the English market, but I don’t think there is an awful lot between him and Vydra.
Vydra’s form has rocketed Derby into promotion contention, whilst all eyes are on Grealish to see if he can do the same at Villa Park.
In terms of value, you’d have to say Grealish was worth £2-3m more.
