Millwall began their Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory over Preston North End at The Den.

After a summer of transition in SE16, there was a great deal of excitement among Lions fans after what was a dismal season in 2018/2019, in which Millwall narrowly avoided slipping into the third-tier under Neil Harris.

But Millwall quickly put those worries behind them and began the season in the perfect way - with of their summer signing was at the heart of the decisive moment.

Connor Mahoney, who made the switch from Blackburn Rovers earlier in the window, showed his quality with a delicious cross that found Jed Wallace, who dispatched a wonderful volley into the corner that Declan Rudd could only fumble into the side-netting.

The Lions winger was the topic of conversation that day:

From that winner on the opening day, it quickly became apparent that Wallace was going to become Millwall's star player this season. And despite a recent dip in goalscoring form, he's still contributed to 19 goals in the Championship this term - bettered only be Ollie Watkins and the league's top scorer Aleksander Mitrovic.
Prior to Matt Smith's hat-trick at Forest, Wallace had notched more than any other Millwall player.
Millwall had been enduring a difficult start to 2020, but their win at Nottingham Forest last time out looks to have ignited their play-off charge and suddenly there is a real sense of believe again that Gary Rowett can finish inside the top-six. Despite a change of management and style since Rowett's arrival, the victory over Preston set the tone for what has been a phenomenal season for the Lions.
