One Nottingham Forest player who has enjoyed a steady progression to the club's first team squad is Matty Cash.

Cash first broke into the squad at the start of the 2016/17 season and went on to make a further 23 league appearances for his boyhood club last season.

Despite impressing in his attacking midfield position, Cash will face stiff competition for games this season.

So far Aitor Karanka has brought in three men who could occupy Cash's main position in the form of Joao Carvalho, Diogo Goncalves and Gil Dias.

The 20-year-old has already seen his fellow youth team graduate and attacking midfielder Jorge Grant leave the club on loan this summer despite impressing last season.

We asked our writers whether Cash will be a guaranteed starter next season.

Jay Williams

Cash is a useful squad option for Aitor Karanka but he is not guaranteed starts.

He could get a lot better over the next few years if he continues to develop at the same rate and play regular games but he could have to settle for more bench appearances next season.

Cash’s ability to play in central midfield, on the wing or as a wing-back makes him a top asset for the squad.

Christian Fuller

After an impressive second half of the season, the expectations of the Forest fans will be enough to keep Matty Cash in the starting line-up this coming season.

Having had his fair share of injury concerns, if he can stay fit throughout the campaign, Cash is bound to be a starter for Aitor Karanka’s side.

Forest certainly aren’t done in this transfer window, so Cash will be hoping a big name player won’t be replacing him next season.

Gary Hutchinson

Nobody is a guaranteed starter at the City Ground next season.
Competition for places is high and will only increase once things get under way. Do I think he's good enough to be a starter? Yes, absolutely, but I don't manage Forest.

Jay Taylor

I wouldn’t say guaranteed but he should play his fair share of games. With the continental influx at Forest nailing down a starting place week-in and week-out is going to be more difficult.
It all depends on how they settle and how Cash works to force his way into the team.
Not a guaranteed starter - but an important first-team player.

Louie Chandler

Guaranteed is a bit of a stretch, but he has a good chance of being a starter.

His versatility will help him out and it could seem him employed as a fullback more often if Karanka brings in more central-midfielders.
