‘He is back, League One be scared’ – These Portsmouth fans love one player’s role in Sunderland win

Portsmouth continued their rapid rise up the League One table on Saturday by winning at Sunderland for the first time since 2008 – with striker John Marquis the match-winner for the South Coast outfit.

Kenny Jackett’s men started the campaign by collecting just two points from their opening three games, but have bounced back with four impressive victories in five to climb into the top-six.

Portsmouth started brightly at the Stadium of Light, breaking the deadlock through Marcus Harness, but were quickly pegged back through Charlie Wyke’s 11th-minute equaliser.

But from then on in it was all about Marquis, who put Jackett’s men back in front midway through the first-half before sealing the points with a late penalty to move Pompey above the Black Cats in the table.

Marquis has endured a tricky start to the campaign, netting just once in seven previous league outings, but came alive with an inspired display in the North East.

The former Doncaster frontman, who scored 14 goals in his debut season at Fratton Park, appeared back to his best – and Portsmouth fans were more than delighted to see Marquis back amongst the goals.
