Barnsley captured the signing of Cameron McGeehan in the summer of 2017, with the midfielder stepping up from League Two and Luton Town.
His former side have recently overtaken his current club in the League One table and midfielder George Moncur has made the trip in the other direction, but at the time capturing McGeehan was a big deal for the Tykes.
It was a big jump too, leaping from League Two into the Championship and a move that few could begrudge the former Chelsea youth player.
The signing was warmly received by the Barnsley fans, not only because it signalled a certain ambition, but also for the length of the contract. Tying the former Norwich man up on a three-year deal seemed astute business and signalled a certain intent from the Tykes hierarchy.
The only aspect of the deal that didn't please them was his shocking haircut, although time has put paid to that.
McGeehan wasn't able to stop them slipping out of the second-tier last season, but the young squad that was being assembled at the time has finally come to fruition this season.
It took a loan spell at Scunthorpe for him to find his feet, but that preparation has stood him in good stead this season and he's excelled. His work rate has been incredible alongside Alex Mowatt in the middle of the park and a driving force behind them pressing hard for a top two place.
Whilst the signing in 2017 didn't bring the instant success that the fans had hoped for, it has proven to be a clever plan for the future and hopefully next season he can finally prove his worth in the Championship.
