Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has called on centre-back Dominic Iorfa to learn from the mistakes he made in last night's Papa John's Trophy defeat to League One rivals Burton Albion.

With the scores level at 2-2 early in the second half, Iorfa flew into a rash challenge on Deji Oshilaja inside the box in a moment that would ultimately prove decisive as Davis Keillor-Dunn subsequently slotted home a match-winning penalty.

The result leaves Wednesday bottom of Northern Group H with no points from two games but, speaking to Yorkshire Live after the final whistle, Moore focussed on some the individual performances – urging Iorfa to use the match as a learning experience.

He said: "For him, it is about staying to the simple basics. He has got to be out and out defender.

"He has made costly errors. He went into make a challenge tonight and he brought the lad down for the penalty.

"He has to learn from it. We will continue to work with Dom. He has got the full backing of the team. He has to continue."

Iorfa has been a regular fixture in Moore's back three this season but once Mark McGuinness and Akin Famewo are back fit, he may be at risk of losing his place in the side.

This is an important season at Wednesday for the 27-year-old, whose contract with the Yorkshire club is up in the summer.

The Verdict

Iorfa's decision-making ultimately proved costly for Wednesday last night as his challenge on Oshilaja gave Keillor-Dunn the chance to bag the winner.

It seems Moore believes that sending a message to the centre-back directly through the press is the best way to encourage him to learn from last night's mistakes.

2022/23 looks set to be a big year for Iorfa, with plenty of defensive competition in the squad and his contract running down.

It'll be interesting to see whether Iorfa gets a chance to respond on the pitch against Wycombe on Saturday.
