Swansea City's new Head Coach Steve Cooper has claimed he will need to be "creative" in the summer transfer window in order to continue the club's progression.

The 39-year-old was appointed Swansea boss last week on the back of a thorough recruitment process after Graham Potter's departure to Premier League side Brighton.

Potter guided Swansea to a tenth-placed finish in the Championship on limited resources last season, and former England U17 coach Cooper has now been tasked with continuing Potter's impressive work at the Liberty Stadium.

Speaking in his first press conference, Cooper said the club is aiming to keep hold of the club's best young players who thrived under Potter, while adding to the squad's current core with some fresh additions.

So, what could Swansea's summer business entail with Cooper at the helm?

We take a look in today's FLW Six Pointer...

In what ways can Cooper be creative in the transfer market?

"Cooper guided his England Under-17s squad to World Cup glory back in 2017, so he already has an excellent track record of working with young players.

"Swansea currently have youth in abundance in the likes of Joe Rodon, Connor Roberts and Oli McBurnie, and it seems probable that Cooper will supplement the talent already in place with further youthful signings.

"Cooper said in his press conference that he will be delving into the loan market and, by doing this, he could utilise his contacts established through his FA links to bring some of his young English talent to SA1."

What type of player will Cooper be looking for?

"The new Swans boss' attractive playing style is a perfect fit with 'The Swansea Way' that has been associated with the club over the last decade or so, and would have been a major consideration in the club's recruitment process.

"Cooper will need to recruit dynamic players who are able to execute this, while they will also need to be disciplined enough in order to adhere to the clear identity that Cooper establishes.

"Therefore, it will be important that Swansea don't dive straight into the transfer market and sign the first young loanees who become available, as they will need to undergo background checks to ensure they fit in with Cooper's style."

Where do Swansea need to strengthen most?

"A number of players have already been released from the club this summer including the likes of Leroy Fer, Martin Olsson and Wilfried Bony, while Daniel James has also joined Manchester United.

"Therefore, Swansea's squad currently looks quite threadbare and short of vast experience. The club need to prioritise signing players at full-back, centre-midfield and up-front ahead of the new season.

"Additionally, both goalkeepers Kristoffer Nordfeldt and Erwin Mulder failed to establish themselves in the side last season, so Cooper may also look to recruit a new number one."

Has anyone been linked so far?

"Swansea's transfer activity was largely on hold while the club searched for a new manager, which means they will only now be seriously on the look-out for incomings.

"They have already been linked with an ambitious swoop for Chelsea defender Reece James, while Plymouth midfielder Ruben Lameiras and Forest Green defender Nathan McGinley have also been mentioned.

"However, it should be expected that Swansea's main targets start emerging over the coming weeks when Cooper really gets his feet under the table at the Liberty Stadium."

Could Swansea lose any further players ahead of next season?

"Following Potter's departure, there would have been real concern this would have led to a mass exodus of players from the club. However, Swansea's appointment of a manager in a similar mould to Potter appears to have eased these worries for the moment.

"There does continue to be underlying speculation regarding moves for a number of Swansea's key assets, with McBurnie and Matt Grimes both linked with Premier League moves to Brighton and Everton respectively.

"However, Swansea have been boosted by Mike van der Hoorn and Wayne Routledge both signing contract extensions, which suggests there is a genuine belief among the playing staff in what Swansea are trying to achieve."

So, can Cooper be a success at Swansea?

"He has his work cut out to follow in Potter's footsteps, as the former manager's achievements last season were extremely impressive given the financial circumstances at the club following Premier League relegation.

"The fact Cooper needs to be creative suggests the financial predicament is not much better this campaign, and he will really need to make the most of his contacts in order to strengthen the squad effectively.

"However, Cooper's record as an international manager means he is unlikely to be overwhelmingly focused on transfers, and the work on the training ground will be most important. He needs to stick to his methods and create a clear identity at the club in order to get the fans on-side from the off."
