A famous face was spotted watching on this weekend as MK Dons overcame bitter rivals AFC Wimbledon at Stadium MK, as seen on Quest’s EFL highlights show.
Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, a former MK Dons youngster, was seen in the stands watching the game as the home side ran out 2-1 winners.
The England midfielder has a free weekend with the international break, courtesy of a hamstring injury. The afforded him the time to take in a game, with the eagerly-anticipated fixture a perfect way to spend a Saturday lunchtime.
His presence didn’t escape the attention of the Quest TV pundits, with Sam Saunders passing comment on his presence at the game.
“With the international break, he has come to watch his team,” said Saunders. “Seen some of the new boys come through the ranks like he did, hopefully, some of these boys will go on to have half the career that Dele has had.”
MK fielded some of their younger players during the win, something that fellow Quest pundit Ian Holloway believes is the right thing for the club to do.
“You need to put them into a slightly lesser game to blood them into it, but when they score two you think, ‘hang on, I can’t leave him out after that.’ It’s exactly what you want but the problem you have is trying to keep them there but when they do that well, they more or less write their own name on the team-sheet.”
The Dons have been beaten in their last two league fixtures, losing against Accrington Stanley and Peterborough United, but got back to winning ways against their rivals courtesy of goals by Sam Nombe and Rhys Healey.
With Pete Winkelman outlining the size of the losses MK are incurring every week, it’s no surprise to see Sam Nombe coming through, along with a host of other young players.
League One sides of a limited means are hoping to find the next big thing in their ranks so they can cash in. They’ll hope someone comes forward as a million-pound player, maybe even someone worth more, who can go on and have a big career but bring revenue into the club.
That and football fortune are the two ways a side can raise significant income quickly. MK Dons have a good record of bringing youth through, as Dele Alli is a testament to.
