The Frank Lampard express came off the rails at the weekend when his Derby County side lost 3-0 at home to an Aston Villa side, that is starting to find its feet under Dean Smith.

Three unanswered Villa goals in the last 16 mins was enough to sink the Rams, who had not been defeated in their previous six Championship outings.

So, what did Frank Lampard get wrong on the weekend?

We discuss.....

George Dagless

Perhaps they just needed to be a bit more conservative.

The thing with Derby is that they are always going to attack and so perhaps getting the balance a little better is what needs to happen.

Sam Rourke

He simply failed to setup his team to combat Smith's attacking philosophy.

Villa were always going to come out and play in an attacking way, and Derby seemed to do the same.

However, Lampard's game-plan should have had a more defensive focus, and he got found out.

George Harbey

I don’t think he necessarily got anything wrong, I think it was just an off day for everyone.

The absence of Mason Mount was felt and that was something Lampard couldn’t have helped, so I think they were unlucky in that sense.

Jay Taylor

I don’t think he got too much wrong - a couple of his player selections were questionable, but I think it was just the mentality of the players that caused them to take their foot off the gas.

Frank Lampard would have been shouting about not being too expectant of a result and that they would need to work hard - but the players obviously didn’t listen to the message.

It’s a learning curve for the Rams’ boss who will have seen a side of his players seldom seen from him.
