Former Barnsley and Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom has become the latest name to be linked with the managerial vacancy at Middlesbrough.

The north east club are looking for a new manager after electing not to renew Tony Pulis' contract at the end of the season, following a seventh place in the Championship.

According to The Northern Echo, Heckingbottom, who only took over as manager of Scottish side Hibernian, is now a contender to take over at the Riverside Stadium.

Heckingbottom has previously managed in the Championship with Barnsley, who he guided to promotion via the League One play-offs in 2016, and to ninth in the Championship the following season, although he endured a less successful spell at Leeds, where he was sacked after just four months and four wins in 16 games last summer.

So would Heckingbottom be a good appointment for Middlesbrough?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their thoughts.

George Brooks

"I'm not sure Heckingbottom would be the right appointment for Middlesbrough

"He's a good manager, but I'm not sure he'd be good enough to take Middlesbrough to the Premier League and that's what he'd be expected to do in his first season.

"There are certainly better options out there and I would expect Boro to go for somebody with more experience."

Toby Wilding

"Heckingbottom's previous experience in the Championship has been rather mixed when you compare his time at Barnsley and Leeds.

"You therefore feel this would be something of a risk for 'Boro to take given their ambition to get back in the Premier League.

"With plenty of other options out there, you feel there would be much more suitable candidates for the job."

Jacob Potter

"I'm really not sure about this one.

"He didn't do very well at Leeds, and there are better options out there for Boro as they look to win promotion next season.

"They would have been better keeping Pulis if they were to appoint Heckingbottom!"
