Football League World’s Nottingham Forest fan pundit Grant Brindley has expressed scepticism at the club’s decision to cash in on striker Karim Ansarifard.

The Reds confirmed on Friday morning that the Iranian had left to join Qatari side Al Sailiya for an undisclosed fee and Brindley believes it leaves them dangerously short up front.

“Only if we bring in at least one other striker who will be better than he is,” the regular punter told Football League World, when asked if the decision to sell was the right one.

“I thought he looked a good player.

“I was looking forward to seeing him get a decent run in the side and was hopeful he could have made a serious impact for us this season.”

Ansarifard made the move to the City Ground from Olympiacos in November 2018 on a free transfer but struggled to find his feet in the East Midlands.

Under Aitor Karanka and Marin O’Neill he made just 12 league appearances, scoring twice and assisting two more, as he showed only flashes of ability.

But, despite an underwhelming campaign, Brindley is hoping the Reds still managed to bring in a decent fee.

“I think we should have looked to get between at least £2-3million,” he said.

“His all round play was pretty good and, given a run in the side, I think he would have scored goals.

“He only had a year left on his contract and, to say we signed him on a free transfer, if we can get around that it wouldn’t be bad business.”

It was a departure that leaves new boss Sabri Lamouchi with Lewis Grabban as his sole first-team striking option, assuming the transfer-listed Daryl Murphy departs.

So, who would be the ideal forward the for the club to bring in?

“I think we will get at least one striker in, and hopefully one with real quailty,” Brindley said.

“I would like us to get Dwight Gayle but I think his wages will be too high for us.

“I would take Tammy Abraham on loan if he is going to be available again, we were in for him last year but lost out to Villa. Matej Vydra wouldn’t be a bad addition either as he has a good goal scoring record in the Championship.”
