Rotherham's Semi Ajayi is edging closer to a move to West Brom, according to journalist Matt Wilson.

The two clubs are believed to have agreed a fee of £1.5m, although this amount could rise with add-ons.

Slaven Bilic has been in search of a replacement for Craig Dawson for some time, and Ajayi fits the bill. He is a powerful and domineering centre-back like Dawson, and at 25 he still has plenty of potential to improve.

Our FLW Six Pointer looks at whether this is a good move by West Brom and what The Millers defender can bring to The Baggies' defence.

Will he get into the starting line-up?

"West Brom have two very experienced and accomplished centre-backs in Ahmed Hegazi and Kyle Bartley, so Ajayi may find it difficult to break into the first-team at first.

"Bilic could play all three however, he utilised a similar system at West Ham at times and it would be a good way to break Ajayi in the team, as there would be less pressure on him and so he should make fewer mistakes.

"Ajayi was brilliant at times for Rotherham last season, despite their defence often coming under intense pressure. He should impress straight from the off this season and could form a great partnership with Hegazi."

Could he prove to be a bargain for West Brom?

"£1.5m is a great fee for a defender with many years left in his career. He is on an upward trajectory and he is making constant improvements to his game, so his value will only increase.

"With that, he should become more and more important for West Brom and if he acts as a long-term replacement for Dawson then £1.5m will seem like nothing.

"The fee is likely to arise with add-ons, but if it does then that will mean he has played well and therefore he would be worth every penny."

What are his best attributes?

"Ajayi is a very physical defender, and he is a tough opponent for any Championship striker. He is a defender prepared for a battle but he can also handle tricky and skilful opponents, so he is ready for whatever the Championship has to offer.

"He combines his pace and power well to break up play and doesn't allow players to get past him.

"His aerial threat perhaps makes him a stand-out defender, as it allows him to be a key player in both boxes. He is reliable at making clearances and chipped in with seven goals last season, which could prove valuable for The Baggies next season."

Is he an adequate replacement for Craig Dawson?

"It is a big responsibility to replace Dawson but if Ajayi plays his own game and concentrates on improving then he could be the perfect replacement.

"Bilic could be vital in how Ajayi settles in. The Croatian played in defence in his playing career and he should pass on vital bits of information to improve Ajayi and make him learn from his mistakes.

"The 25-year-old is not yet at Dawson's level but in four years time when he is at the same age he will likely be better than him and could be an effective Premier League defender."

Would he be able to step up to the Premier League if West Brom were promoted?

"If he continues to play well and is a big factor in winning promotion then he will be brimming with confidence, which is only going to lead to continued good performances and improvements in his game.

"If he keeps learning and improving as he has then he should be able to improve his anticipation of how top strikers play.

"He already has the physical attributes to deal with strikers but their movement and sharp thinking is currently where he would become unstuck."

What does he need to do to become a top defender?

"Whilst he is great at man-marking and challenging opponents for the ball, his defensive positioning and awareness of what to do when he is not near the ball requires improvement.

"He has to know what the next step is likely to be in an attack and how to snuff it out before it develops into a dangerous move.

"He will pick this up with more game time and by learning from the more experienced defenders at the club, and if he can add that to his game over the course of the season he will already be one of the best defenders in the division."
