When Jay-Roy Grot signed for Leeds in 2017, fans hoped he was going to slot straight into the team and excel, guiding Leeds up the table.

He joined from Dutch outfit NEC Breda after an impressive season or two following his graduation from their academy in 2015.

After making little over 20 appearances in the Championship for the Whites, Grot was sent out on loan for this season, back to VVV Venlo, where he has made quite a few appearances, but struggled in front of goal.

Still 21, though, Grot has a lot of time on his side and he may well think that he can get his Leeds career back on track when his loan at VVV Venlo ends this summer.

Using the example of Mateusz Klich who excelled at Leeds after a poor start to life at the club, Grot will hope he can come in next season and act as a squad player to the forward players, hoping to earn a place in the starting squad eventually.

When he signed for the club, he arrived with a flashy highlights reel and a plethora of Youtube compilations that showed he could be a roaring success, but it didn't work out.

Born in Suriname, Grot has played for many of the Netherlands youth teams, following a route from Suriname to Holland that the likes of Frank Rijkaard, Edgar Davids and more recently Gini Wijnaldum have trod.

Grot had huge expectations, but has so far failed to live up to them. Yet, he will fancy himself to make a name for himself next season.

Sadly for him, it may be out of his control, with Marcelo Bielsa preferring a small squad.

With Leeds set to enter the market for at least one forward this summer, it seems unlikely that Bielsa will find a place in the squad for Grot, who can play across the front three.

Whether he can find another suitor in England or returns to Holland, Jay-Roy Grot still has time to get his career back on track, but it is unlikely Leeds will facilitate that.
