Writing in a Q&A for the Athletic, Leeds United reporter Phil Hay has revealed how Mateusz Klich could have been replaced in the side around January time.

The Whites were flying before the break in play due to Coronavirus and fans of the club will be looking forward to the season resuming before too long.

Indeed, the wait for a return to the Premier League has been a tough one for the Whites but, right now, they are closing in on it.

Among the players helping them do so has been Mateusz Klich but, interestingly, Hay has revealed how he faced the axe around January.

He said:

“He [Klich] is vital, as shown by the fact that Bielsa never, ever drops him.

“Someone suggested to me that he [Bielsa] was seriously considering replacing Klich at the end of January (around the time of the dramatic win over Millwall) but it’ll be a huge shock the day when Klich is named on the bench.”

The Verdict

It certainly would have been a surprise had Klich come out of the team because he has been one of the most impressive performers since Marcelo Bielsa came in.

There was a time that Klich's future was uncertain when he first joined the club but under Bielsa he has been key in helping them challenge for promotion.

It seems as though Bielsa reconsidered dropping him during this period, then, and fans will feel as though the Argentine made the right call here.
