Aston Villa's Jack Grealish received a punch to the back of the head from a pitch invader in today's Birmingham derby.

The 'fan' ran onto the pitch early in the game and landed a blow to the back of the 23-year-old's head, with no provocation at all.

He reacted superbly, not even acknowledging the existence of his aggressor despite being knocked to the floor and in doing so, avoided further trouble or an increase in hostility.

It's the sort of thing nobody likes to see at a football match, whilst the heat of a derby and the passion is expected, violence towards the players is absolutely abhorrent and it will surely not be tolerated.

For the Villa midfielder to react in the way he did is a credit to his character and maturity. Sometimes, it isn't just what you do with the ball on a pitch that defines you.

Grealish is in only his second match back following injury and was told earlier this week he 'wouldn't be targeted' by Garry Monk's side'.

Fans, players and journalists have been quick to jump on social media and condemn the shocking scenes this afternoon.
