Sheffield United, at the time of writing this article, were sat at 1-1 with Birmingham City and in danger of seeing their playoff hopes slip away in the Championship.

After romping to promotion and the League One title last season, the Blades made a stunning start to life in the second tier and indeed, sat top of the pile before Wolves peeled away with an imperious run of form.

While it has been an excellent season regardless for the club - as many fans would have no doubt took just simply staying up at the start of the campaign - a lot of emphasis has been placed on how the club went about their January transfer business.

There was, as always at Bramall Lane, plenty of emphasis on the boardroom and what funds were made available, but of that money given, did Chris Wilder use it wisely? There is an argument to be made that he perhaps did not.

Wilder had an active enough window in January, but some of the signings he made have been questionable. Ryan Leonard, Lee Evans, James Wilson, and Ricky Holmes have all aquitted themselves to varying degrees of success, with Evans undoubtedly the standout performer among the new boys.

Leonard, a player who was courted since the summer of 2017 has looked off the pace in the main, and has left many Blades fans questioning why the club pursuied the midfielder for so long.

Likewise Holmes, a player who was so impressive in his time at Charlton and worked with Chris Wilder at Northampton, is a player who has simply not impressed. Holmes, who has always looked more adept in a number 10 role, has looked nowhere near the standard of David Brooks or Mark Duffy in that role, and question marks can be raised about why someone who does not fit into the Blades system was signed.

Finally, Man United striker Wilson, who was always going to be something of a gamble. Wilson got off to the ideal start for United with a goal at Norwich, but has since found himself short on minutes, and with murmurings around the club of a minor attitude problem, Wilson has certainly not won over the Blades faithful.

Things can always turn round, and in no way does Chris Wilder deserve 'criticism' for his work with United, far from it. However, some Blades fans will be scratching their heads at what might have been had, A. More money been invested in January, and B. The money that was spent was spent more wisely.

Blades fans, what do you think? How do you think the January recruits have done? Let us know in the comments!
