Birmingham City secured a vital three points on Saturday afternoon as they look to pull clear of the relegation zone, with new manager Steve Cotterill picking up just his second win as Blues boss following his appointment at the start of last month.

Che Adams proved the difference in the tight affair at St Andrew’s, with the talented young forward’s first half goal ensuring the points stayed in Birmingham this weekend.

The win takes the club out of the bottom three following Sunderland, Bolton and Burton’s failure to secure maximums this weekend, and will come as a huge boost to those associated with the club ahead of the busy build-up to Christmas.

The squad assembled by former gaffer Harry Redknapp in the summer looked like it was finally coming together on Saturday, and many will begin to feel that their side are finally showing signs of turning the proverbial corner.

Defender Harlee Dean, a summer signing from Brentford, was labelled a ‘collosus at the back’ by one fan, with a number of other solid performances from the new men impressing the crowds.

However, despite the win, are Birmingham really back on the path to an unexpected push for promotion?

The club are only eleven points away from a playoff spot, a tally which is easily catchable in this unpredictable league.

A solid run of form, maybe three or four wins on the bounce, would propel the club firmly into playoff contention, and all of the disappointment endured at the start of the campaign will feel like a distance memory.

Yet things are not that simple.

Cotterill picked up his first win against high flying Cardiff in his first game in charge, and it has taken him a full month to pick up his second.

The club could easily succumb to a barren run of results once again, and Blues fans must not be too hasty or unrealistic with their hopes and expectations.

This is a stepping stone to improvement and nothing else, and a disappointing display on Wednesday evening at Middlesbrough will send the club firmly back to square one.
